A print of fernleaf peony originally published in Paris in Choix Des Plus Belle Fleurs et des Plus Beaux Fruits in 1827. Original artwork was painted by Pierre-Joseph Redouté, court artist for queens and empresses of France, starting from Marie-Antoinette to Empress Josephine (wife of Napoleon) and her successor, Empress Marie-Louise.

This superb print is a faithful and restored copy of the original artwork with accurate colour balance on special paper that would retain its colours for long period when properly framed and hanged.

History of the artwork

Redouté's famous edition of botanical paintings Choix des plus belle fleurs was published in Paris in 36 parts (each part with four plates) between 1827 and 1833. The publication contains 144 colour plates of flowers with some including insects and is dedicated to the Princesses Louise and Marie d'Orléans. Wet watercolour paper was pressed onto stipple-engraved copper plate, which was later melted. After printing, final touches were added with watercolour paints. Original prints are very rare and can only appear on high-level auctions.
